Friday, 10 May 2019, 10.15 a.m. (sharp),

prof. Jinchao Xu, Penn State University

at the conference room of IMATI CNR in Pavia, will give a lecture titled:

Scientific Computing and Deep Learning

as part of the Applied Mathematics Seminar (IMATI-CNR e Dipartimento di Matematica, Pavia).

At the end a refreshment will be organized.

Abstract: In this lecture, I will give an elementary introduction to two different research fields, scientific computing and machine learning, and discuss about their relationships. For scientific
computing, I will focus on numerical methods for partial differential equations, especially finite element and multigrid methods. For machine learning, I will focus on deep neural networks, especially convolutional neural networks. I will report some recent mathematical results to illustrate the connections of these two different fields and motivate some interesting cross-fertilization research topics.
